"The Colour Orange" Queen's Day Amsterdam 2011. In celebration of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands' official birthday everyone has to walk around wearing something orange. Orange is the colour of the Dutch Royal Family. The lineage of the current dynasty- The House of Oranje-Nassau- dates back to Willem van Oranje (William of Orange). But while the colour orange has royal roots in the Netherlands, today it symbolises a broader pride in the country and in being Dutch. This was the penultimate Queen's Day, now known as King's Day since the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander in 2013. Celebrations take pace all over Holland but the brightest and best known are perhaps those in Amsterdam. Everything is closed but everyone in busy. (Published by BLURB.COM 2011)
